Strategic Packing Tips for Your Renovation
For those who find it difficult enough to pack their own suitcases (you know who you are!) packing your possessions away during a renovation can seem like a bit of a mountain to climb, especially when you have so much else to think about. Good strategic organisation is the key to ultimately protecting your valuable possessions from the unpredictability of the renovation works whilst also giving your workforce the freedom to work in a clutter free environment. To help this process run a little bit smoother we have come up with a list of strategic tips for tackling this daunting task.
Get organised before you start
Although it might seem like a waste of your time, creating a to do list or ‘plan of action’ beforehand can be a life saver when it comes to making sure of a quick and efficient packing process. It ensures everyone involved knows exactly what they will be doing at every stage and minimises the chance of unexpected problems cropping up when you least expect them.
Condense your belongings
When packing it is important to condense as much as possible. If things can be flat packed or disassembled beforehand they are much easier to pack. Smaller items should be gathered within small storage boxes or bags to keep them together. It might also be a good time to consider getting rid of a few things that you don’t need any more or haven’t used in a while. Donating, selling or throwing away some of the clutter is a good way to make your job easier whilst packing and give you a clutter free home when the renovation is done.
Create a Master List
One of the most useful things you can do is create a master list as you pack so you know exactly where everything is stored. As well as thanking yourself when you come to unpack it can be a life saver if you need quick access to something during the renovation. This handy document can tell you or anyone else at a glance the exact location of that winter blanket that you find yourself so desperately needing.

Keep Boxes Liftable
With the boxes in front of you it is natural to begin to fill the larger ones first, often with the biggest, heaviest items. Filling larger boxes with lighter objects (such as utensils and table top items) and smaller boxes with heavier items (such as books and computer equipment) is a great way to reduce the weight of boxes, making them much easier to lift and move.
When packing fragile items be sure each is well cushioned and is not touching another item or the outside of the box. It is also useful to pack these together in lighter boxes to allow for greater care when lifting and moving.
When boxes are packed it is time to store them away. To maximise your packing space, it is always a good idea to start with heavier items at the bottom allowing the lighter items to sit on top. You have already separated the items that you might need during the renovation so make sure these are last to be loaded into the space so they can be easily accessed whenever they are needed.
Don’t be caught out
Portable storage solutions offer you the flexibility that other spaces cannot. Even thought the offer of using a friend’s garage for storage is tempting, you cannot guarantee that there will enough space to fit all of your things or that they wont want the use of their garage back before your work is completed. Hiring your own portable storage container will take a lot of the stress out of your renovation by allowing you to choose the size of storage that is right for you, saving you the stress of having to find alternative arrangements at short notice.
