The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has published the Notifiable Data Breaches Quarterly Statistics Report 1 April to 30 June 2018. Page 8 refers to 5 breaches caused by insecure disposal. It doesn’t seem like a significant number, but it’s important that we understand that most breaches caused by insecure disposal practices are not immediately (if ever) detected.
Once an organisation’s data bearing devices are sold or ‘recycled’ then detecting whether the data has been accessed it impossible. Don’t rely on detection. Bank on prevention. Only use highly credentialed specialists who provide full chain of custody and auditable data sanitization services.
